Statement of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. General President Dr. Willis L. Lonzer, III on Death of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee
Yesterday, U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a giant among giants left us. Her tenacity and strength were welcomed allies as she navigated the many nuances associated with advancing civil rights, racial and social justice, and human rights, especially for women and children. In 2001, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. honored Representative Lee’s service to the country with its highest award for a nonmember, the Alpha Award of Honor. Representative Lee’s passing denotes the loss of a congressional champion for marginalized communities domestically, abroad, and in Texas’ 18th Congressional District (Houston) where she served. She was a friend of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and will be greatly missed. We extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends.
